Knock On Wood
COCA gallery is opening a group show of some local artists who sometimes work with wood. Curated by L. Kelly Lyles, the show includes 34 artists working in a wide range of approaches. The graphic I’ve made specifically for this blog posting (above) is just a sampling to the diversity on view.
Some quotes lifted from the COCA press release: “The exhibition’s title refers to the superstition, perhaps first used by the Celts, that knocking on trees might wake the spirits inside, thus providing protection or scaring away evil spirits. Curatorial advisor and artist Joel Colvos recognizes how wood is “a material of paradox: both common and precious, temporary yet long-lasting and remarkably pliable,” in essence a metaphor for the creative process.”
I barely got in by a hair as I only found out about the show via a FaceBook posting right as the selection process was wrapping up. ‘Super play Extra 1’ was shown once at a coffee house show right as covid hit and has been rattling around my studio ever since, waiting for its moment.
Both opening receptions on First Thursdays in March and April are free to attend, with support from 4culture’s Public Free Access grant. Regular gallery days/hours are Thursday through Saturday, 11 am - 4 pm. Closes April 25.
Location: The Tashiro Kaplan Building (side entrance), 114 Third Ave S. Seattle, WA
