How to Build a Hive

To Build a Hive; R Williamson, wood, masonite, plywood, brads, acrylic; 46” x 42” x 1.25”; 2026

Not necessarily for honey bees, but perhaps for wasps or hornets; in ‘To Build a Hive’ cells that resemble the rock formation of columnar basalt slant across the panel. Three of the individual cells depict parts of the life cycle of your average wasp - in one, a larva has spun a silk-like cap that seals the cell while it enters it pupal phase; in another an adult emerges ready to join the activities of the colony, and finally the laying of eggs for the next generation.

Made from repurposed wood scraps and masonite, treated in various ways and mounted to plywood. Hangs either from a braided wire on the back or by using the French Cleat that is installed on the back.

Currently part of my show for March, ‘26, ‘Malachite Pond’, on view at Lighthouse Roasters Cafe, in upper Fremont in North Seattle.
