Gaylen Hansen - Retrospective
So this show ends in two day from now, but that’s still two days in which you can go and see it. I’d been meaning to catch this for weeks and finally went just before the holiday. It didn’t disappoint. I find Gaylen Hansens work full of catchy ideas, rhythmic gesture, and sly humor. All with a unique geo-perspective that embraces both sides of the Cascades. You’ll see the light themes for which he is well known: giant grasshoppers, comedian ducks, arrays of bees, West Coast still lifes, and as much trout as you can imagine on a canvas. All in the highly painterly yet graphic hand that characterizes his later work.
The work on display spans about thirty years, with many pieces dating from 20 years ago. But also a few recent paintings are included. Since Gaylen is now 104 years old, it’s quite amazing to see that he is still working at the easel.
Before it closes: Gaylen Hansen Retrospective Exhibition at Woodside Braseth Gallery at 1201 Western Avenue, Seattle, WA 98101. Through December 1, 2025
