Late last year, (2025,) I received a commission for an artwork based on some tree trunk wall pieces that I had done some 6 years ago for the reception area at the Lodge at Saint Edwards. The clients had a very specific place in mind and wanted the piece to butt up to the ceiling. Although I had done those conifer trunks and many stump-type versions, this would be the first time that I had portrayed foliage of any quantity and as such, the idea represented something new. Always a good inducement. While it took me much longer than expected to finish the piece, eventually ‘Understory 1’ was complete and got installed yesterday at the residence at the north end of Lake Washington.
